Stephen R. Grossbart, Ph.D.

Founder and Principal, SRGForward

Steve Grossbart launched SRGForward in 2024—a logical step in a long and notable career in data analytics serving some of the nation’s leading healthcare systems.

Since he started working in healthcare in 1996, Steve has met and worked with people who universally share the commitment to “do no harm.” Yet, many organizations do not provide all the tools required for success in this guiding mission.

Early in his career as a data scientist, Steve perceived the value of statistical reasoning within the healthcare industry. Recognizing that both clinical and statistical reasoning are crucial to progress in medicine, he became the clinicians' statistician—managing data and interpreting results that positioned healthcare providers to advance care and successfully carry out their mission. Steve honed his skills in risk-management methodology, and developed a keen understanding of evidence-based medicine and how to measure it. Before long, he was serving on national committees that endorsed performance measures and fueled value-based payment models backed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

His career progressed when he was named a chief quality officer for a large health system. For 12 years, Steve was at the forefront of successfully implementing a data-driven model that dramatically improved clinical quality and patient safety.

Steve's journey highlights the importance of bridging the gap between clinical expertise and data-driven decision-making.

Steve founded SRGForward with the mission to revolutionize healthcare quality and delivery through the power of data and analytics. He guides clients toward a future where quality care is not just a goal but the reality.

Health Catalyst

Steve provided intellectual capital to staff and clients and oversaw clinical quality and data analytics services at Health Catalyst, a leading provider of data and analytics technology and services.

This included overseeing data engineers who installed and maintained the Health Catalyst data platform, which integrated data from over 200 disparate systems, including EHRs, claims, work force, and smaller point solutions (including patient experience, infection prevention, voluntary event reporting, revenue cycle), as well as analytics engineers whom he directed in the development of business intelligence and visualizations to support operational and clinical reporting

Mercy Health (now Bon Secours Mercy Health)

Steve served as Senior Vice President, Chief Analytics Officer, and Chief Quality Officer at one of the largest Catholic healthcare systems in the country.

As Chief Quality Officer, Steve designed and led Mercy Health’s system quality department and consolidated hospital and regional quality departments into an enterprise-wide organization with a $30 million annual budget that included more than 220 FTEs. Under Steve’s leadership, Mercy Health experienced dramatic and measurable improvements in clinical quality, significantly reducing patient harm, mortality, and length of stay. In 2008 and 2009, Mercy Health was recognized nationally as one of the top 15 health systems in quality by Truven Healthcare and remained among the top 20% during his tenure as CQO.

Steve served as the health system’s first Chief Analytics Officer. In this role, he created and led the enterprise-wide advanced analytics department that merged multiple hospital-based analyst teams and designed and staffed a new population health analytics team to support Mercy Health’s clinically integrated network.

Nationally Recognized Expertise

Steve was named among among 50 Experts Leading the Field of Patient Safety by Becker’s Hospital Review. His published work has appeared in Medical Care Research and Review, American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy, Journal of Healthcare Management and Archives of Surgery. He has served on and co-chaired National Quality Forum committees, and currently sits on the editorial board of the Journal for Healthcare Quality.

Additional Experience and Education

Steve’s prior experience includes positions at Charlotte-based Premier, Inc. and Intermountain Health, and the University of Florida. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, his master’s degree from Brown University, and a B.A. with High Distinction and Highest Honors from the University of Michigan.
